Whole In The Sight Of God

"What a blessing to have found your website. I work with early childhood special needs children as an assistant and was so touched by your Whole in the sight of God CD. I want to purchase more of the Whole in the Sight of God CD to give to the parents of the children in my class and my coworkers. It will be such an encouragement for them also. This job is very challenging at times and your music gave a new spark to my job....Thank you so much for listening to God's voice."
- Paula Born, Grundy County Special Education Cooperative.
Coal City, Illinois

"Warm and thoughtful, moving and powerful. Thank you for writing this special song that shows you understand disability."
- Joni Earickson-Tada, Founder of Joni & Friends
Agoura Hills, California

"It is so rare that a song moves me so deeply. I thank God that He made it very clear to you to have this ministry."
- Anita La Fontaine, Los Angeles, California

Four months into my wife's second pregnancy we went in for what we expected would be a routine ultrasound. About halfway through the procedure a shadow crossed over the technician's face. "I hate to be the one to tell you this," she said.

That was the day we learned two things. One, that we would be having a little boy. Two, that he would be born with Spina Bifida.

We were whisked into a specialist's office where we were promptly informed that we were going to have a very sick child. They told us we should seriously consider the option of abortion.

Immediately, family members on both sides began to weigh in with their opinions. We received both pressure to abort and pressure not to. My wife and I had always opposed abortion rhetorically but now that our own flesh and blood was involved we decided to pray for the coming week about the decision.

God showed us that he was sending us a soul to care for; a soul who would be able to feel and give love; a soul who would bring more of God's light and spirit into our household. Our Henry is now eleven years old.

Looking back on that time as we were waiting for Henry to be born I remember going into a little windowless writer's room at Starsong, where I was a staff songwriter. I needed to process what was happening. As I began to write God showed me that we are all broken in some way - after all, who is sinless among us? - but that God loves every single one of us and through the grace of His spirit all of us can be "whole."

Whole in the Sight of God is a CD created especially for families who are loving a child with special needs. The project includes the song that I wrote that day and a spoken love letter woven from the affirmations of twenty-five parents who are raising a child with special needs. This journey through words and music is a gift of love and encouragement for anyone whose life is touched by disability.

WHOLE IN THE SIGHT OF GOD
Words & Music by Steve Siler

Becky sits in the darkness imagining the sky
Finding her rainbows in the blessings of life
Without crayons she colors the world with her smile
Opening eyes by just being a child

She is whole in the sight of God
She is whole in the sight of God
She can see all things through the eyes of the spirit
She is whole in the sight of God

Johnny sits in his wheelchair as the children run and play
Feeling the warm summer sun upon his face
He moves everyone with his laughter and light
and through prayers they lift up for him every night

He is whole in the sight of God
He is whole in the sight of God
He can run to all things in the path of the spirit
He is whole in the sight of God

None of us is perfect
Every life has a measure of trial
But Father we know
How much you love every single child

Katie lives in deep silence where music never plays
Finding her songs in the joys of each new day
Without notes she's creating a new symphony
'Cause her gentle sweet soul is it's own melody

She is whole in the sight of God
She is whole in the sight of God
She can hear all things through the words of the spirit
She is whole in His sight
We are whole in the sight of God
We are whole in the sight of God
We can do all things through the grace of His spirit
We are whole in the sight of God
